Nokia N97 mini Firmware Appears on Navifirm, Still Waiting for N97 v2

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

The first firmware release for Nokia N97 mini, v10.0.20 / v10.2.20, is now online through Navifirm. This obviously sheds light on N97 mini’s (regional) availability, and while the much anticipated v2 firmware for the larger N97 still remains unavailable, this shows that it will be released very soon. Also we should note that v20.0.19 firmware for N97 can be tried out through RDA via Forum Nokia (another good sign).

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Sascha from MobilPresse.com has written a nice preview for gReader, the upcoming Google Reader client by MojosStuios, which I have been looking forward to for some time now! Originally written in German, Sascha was kind enough to send us an English version of the preview. Hit the read link for more…

ESPNsoccernet: Nice Football widget for Nokia N97 and S60 v5

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

This one’s for anyone who’s into football (or soccer depending on which side of the pond you are). Plusmo have created a great little widget for the N97 and all other S60 5th Edition devices, ESPNsoccernet, with which you choose and follow the league of your liking with live game visualization, commentaries, detailed fixtures. The widget is free on Ovi Store, so click that little blue paper-bag icon on your phone and download the widget already! N97 users can also place the widget on their homescreen, so what more can you ask for?

Xpress Note for Hand-written Notes on S60 v5 Phones

Monday, October 12th, 2009

When the 5800 Xpressmusic was announced I was pretty excited that I was going to be able to use a stylus to take notes with my very-hard-to-read handwriting. But the application for taking notes with a stylus was nowhere to be found. Enter Xpress Note! Xpress Note does just that, and nothing more. The application is compatible with 5800 Xpressmusic, N97 and the 5530 Xpressmusic. If you, like me, would like to quickly scrap a note on your phone, you can download the app here

Google Reader Client Coming Soon To Symbian Phones

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

This one, I’m really looking forward to. As someone almost solely depending on RSS feeds to know what’s going on in the world, I was in desparate need of a good client to follow my Google Reader account on my N97, as I believe many others were. The good news is, it’s almost here! MojoStudios is on the brink of releasing gReader, a Google Reader client for Symbian S60 v3 and v5 phones. The software will be in English and German and the following devices will be supported (at first at least):

Nokia 3250, 5320, 5500, 5530, 5700, 5800, 6110, 6120, 6121, 6210, 6220, 6290, 6650, E50, E51, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E63, E65, E66, E70, E71, E75, E90, N71, N73, N76, N77, N78, N80, N81, N82, N91, N92, N93, N95, N95 8GB, N96, N97, N97 Mini and X6.

Nokia to Acquire Palm??

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

This one’s only a rumour, but as GSM Arena’s stated, it’s too important to pass on. According to Bloomberg, Nokia is planning to acquire Palm, which despite having an R&D budget of a tenth of Nokia, managed to develop a touch-ui OS that is more fluid and usable than Nokia’s own. Hit the via link to read more.

Calender Outlook 1.7 with Nice Homescreen Widget for N97

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

I installed this to my N97 a few days ago, and while it has a few shortcomings. For example, it can’t get the status of to-do notes, whether they were completed or not, so when you run the application it shows all your to-dos. You have to delete the old ones if you’d like to use this app.

But let’s get to the bright side, shall we? Calender Outlook 1.7 shows your calender events, tasks, to-do notes in a way that somewhat resembles Microsoft Outlook’s “Today View”. It gets better with the homescreen widget for the N97. The widget shows up to 4 lines of calender stuff on your homescreen, gently scrolling up and down for any number of entries more than 4.

This app easily replaced other calender related widgets on my homescreen… You can download the file below, or visit the official project page on Sourceforge

Midomi Track ID for Symbian S60v3 and S60v5

Friday, September 18th, 2009

I’d heard that Midomi was heading our way (Symbian S60v3 and S60v5 users) but I learned today that it’s already here! With Midomi Track ID, like Shazam, uses your phone’s microphone to identify the track playing and present you the track name, album it’s featured on, and so on… However, unlike Shazam which can only identify official tracks, Midomi Track ID claims it can identify the track even if you sing or hum into the microphone.

Midomi is on free trial for a limited time unlike Shazam which can be downloaded from Ovi Store for… free!

You can download the S60 v3 version from Ovi Store while the v5 version can be found here.

Great Homescreen Widget for N97: ComingNext

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
coming_next_00

I’ll try to upload some of my favorite applications and widgets for the N97 and other S60 v5 phones, and this is certainly one of them. ComingNext Dual Panel Calender Widget for N97 shows first 5 upcoming events in your calender. The widget has two installation files, and if you activate both on your phone, you get the next 10 events in your calender on your homescreen. Quite convenient! The only downside is that it doesn’t show any of your tasks, regardless of their due dates, but only the meetings and birthdays/anniversary events. Well nothing’s perfect, right?

Here’s the source on symbian-freak.com and you can download v1.11 of the widget below…

Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic goes v31 (31.2.008)

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic gets v31.2.008 firmware update

Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic gets v31.2.008 firmware update

One of Nokia’s (and one of world’s) most popular mobile phones, the 5800 Xpressmusic gets another firmware update. The update is now available through NSU. According to Nokia, the new firmware incorporates an updated version of Ovi Maps software alongside several performance improvements. I will update this post as soon as the complete changelog for this firmware release surfaces.

Although the 5800XM has UDP (User Data Protection) it’s always a good practice to backup all personal information before performing the update.
