Nokia N900 Overclocked to over 1GHz!

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The web monster from Nokia, which has an ARM Cortex A8 CPU with a stock clock speed of 600MHz, has successfully been overclocked to boot at over 1GHz. I too have tested the device at 900MHz and 800MHz speeds and I have had no stability issues at all. Especially at 900MHz, everything feels snappier, and even an already great and responsive phone line N900 benefits from the speed increase dramatically.

Now I would never encourage anyone to go out and overclock their devices, especially when very little, if not nothing, is known about how efficiently the device is cooled (passively of course) and how overclocking the ARM Cortex A8 CPU would affect its and the surrounding components’ lifespan. However, if you are willing to take the risks, you can find how by following the below links…

Here’s the loooong thread, where it all started: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=39753

And here’s how: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=595582&postcount=774

Nokia’s New 3D Multi Touch Patent

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Thanks to Apple and the iPhone (or iPod Touch) we’re familiar with the multi touch concept on mobile phones and devices. Nokia, the foremost company in the mobile phone industry, is yet to come up with a multi touch screen phone though… We found out last week that this might all soon change. Nokia patented a new technology allowing multi touch UIs with pressure sensing (ie sensing how hard you press on the screen), allowing 3D gestures on a phone’s screen to be interpreted as commands.

This has quite a few implications. Firstly, and most obviously, Nokia seems to be preparing to develop multi touch enabled devices in the near future. Secondly, I would interpret pressure sensitive screens as Nokia sticking with resistive touch screen displays, as opposed to capacitive ones preferred by Apple and some other brands.

I, personally prefer resistive screens, as they offer a wider array of input options. Additionally Nokia seems to be upping the ante by adding pressure sensing and re-interpreting the multi touch technology. Lets all wait and see what this will bring upon us!

Nokia N97 mini Firmware Appears on Navifirm, Still Waiting for N97 v2

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

The first firmware release for Nokia N97 mini, v10.0.20 / v10.2.20, is now online through Navifirm. This obviously sheds light on N97 mini’s (regional) availability, and while the much anticipated v2 firmware for the larger N97 still remains unavailable, this shows that it will be released very soon. Also we should note that v20.0.19 firmware for N97 can be tried out through RDA via Forum Nokia (another good sign).

ESPNsoccernet: Nice Football widget for Nokia N97 and S60 v5

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

This one’s for anyone who’s into football (or soccer depending on which side of the pond you are). Plusmo have created a great little widget for the N97 and all other S60 5th Edition devices, ESPNsoccernet, with which you choose and follow the league of your liking with live game visualization, commentaries, detailed fixtures. The widget is free on Ovi Store, so click that little blue paper-bag icon on your phone and download the widget already! N97 users can also place the widget on their homescreen, so what more can you ask for?

Nokia Announces Official Qt Port to Maemo 5

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

This was expected, but nevertheless news this promising can’t be taken for granted! Nokia made it official the other day that Qt, the popular cross-platform application and UI framework was ported to Maemo 5. This implies that Maemo 5 and other mobile devices that support the platform (ie. Symbian) will be even richer in terms native applications. The N900 must be smiling! Video showing Qt running on an N900 and the press release from Espoo after the break…

Xpress Note for Hand-written Notes on S60 v5 Phones

Monday, October 12th, 2009

When the 5800 Xpressmusic was announced I was pretty excited that I was going to be able to use a stylus to take notes with my very-hard-to-read handwriting. But the application for taking notes with a stylus was nowhere to be found. Enter Xpress Note! Xpress Note does just that, and nothing more. The application is compatible with 5800 Xpressmusic, N97 and the 5530 Xpressmusic. If you, like me, would like to quickly scrap a note on your phone, you can download the app here

Nokia Leaning Towards More Maemo?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

According to Digitimes, despite Nokia’s previous statements that they will carry on focusing on Symbian phones, for the first time Nokia is looking to take phone production outside their own company, and are hunting for an ODM manufacturer in Taiwan to produce Maemo-based smartphones and have requested information and quotes from Compal Communications and Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS), according to a Commercial Times story.

Google Reader Client Coming Soon To Symbian Phones

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

This one, I’m really looking forward to. As someone almost solely depending on RSS feeds to know what’s going on in the world, I was in desparate need of a good client to follow my Google Reader account on my N97, as I believe many others were. The good news is, it’s almost here! MojoStudios is on the brink of releasing gReader, a Google Reader client for Symbian S60 v3 and v5 phones. The software will be in English and German and the following devices will be supported (at first at least):

Nokia 3250, 5320, 5500, 5530, 5700, 5800, 6110, 6120, 6121, 6210, 6220, 6290, 6650, E50, E51, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E63, E65, E66, E70, E71, E75, E90, N71, N73, N76, N77, N78, N80, N81, N82, N91, N92, N93, N95, N95 8GB, N96, N97, N97 Mini and X6.

You can get the latest on gReader via Twitter

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Wireless Power Consortium announced on September 30th that the Finnish giant Nokia has joined the Consortium. Although it’s not likely we will be seeing wirelessly charged Nokia products in very near future, it’s great to see Nokia jump on board to participate in the development and application of this exciting technology. The N86 Gets v20

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

A bit earlier than expected, nevertheless as a very welcome surprise to all I’d presume, N86’s v20 firmware was released the other day through FOTA.

Here’s the changelog:

Camera improvements:

  • Improved still image quality
  • Improved video quality
  • Face detection added
  • Red-eye removal added (Nokia note: “this is image processing which removes the red-eye. You need to be in red-eye reduction flash mode for it to be operational. Other flash modes it is disabled as there is a small shot to shot impact due to the extra image processing.”)
  • New focus point indication - this shows where in the scene the camera is focussing
  • Improved Close-up focus. (Nokia note: “As a result you will find in most situations you can focus much closer than before. The new focus point indication will also help in confirming which part of your subject is used for critical focus checking”)

Significant bug fixes to:

  • Web
  • Music store client
  • RealPlayer
  • Ovi Maps (including faster calibration of the digital compass)
  • Here and Now
  • N-Gage client
  • Nokia Messaging

Other New Features:

  • Automatic VoIP re-registration.
  • Ovi Chat shortcut on the homescreen
  • An new Ovi services splash screen
  • An Ovi Store client (though it’s buggy, selections from the Options menu are problematic…. – best use the mobile Ovi Store site in the meantime?)
  • An initial option to check for software updates when a customer first boots up the phone

Also reported,  there’s more free space on C: (around 70MB with a “freshly hard resetted” phone) with v20. There’s more free RAM (around 65MB after booting).
