Sony’s New HFR Comfort-3D Does 3D with a Single Lens

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

With the help of its half-mirror system the HFR Comfort-3D, Sony’s new/upcoming HD camera, does 3D with a single lens instead of two. With 240fps recording, we’ll sure see nice slo-mo’s in 3D!

The N86 Gets v20

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

A bit earlier than expected, nevertheless as a very welcome surprise to all I’d presume, N86’s v20 firmware was released the other day through FOTA.

Here’s the changelog:

Camera improvements:

  • Improved still image quality
  • Improved video quality
  • Face detection added
  • Red-eye removal added (Nokia note: “this is image processing which removes the red-eye. You need to be in red-eye reduction flash mode for it to be operational. Other flash modes it is disabled as there is a small shot to shot impact due to the extra image processing.”)
  • New focus point indication - this shows where in the scene the camera is focussing
  • Improved Close-up focus. (Nokia note: “As a result you will find in most situations you can focus much closer than before. The new focus point indication will also help in confirming which part of your subject is used for critical focus checking”)

Significant bug fixes to:

  • Web
  • Music store client
  • RealPlayer
  • Ovi Maps (including faster calibration of the digital compass)
  • Here and Now
  • N-Gage client
  • Nokia Messaging

Other New Features:

  • Automatic VoIP re-registration.
  • Ovi Chat shortcut on the homescreen
  • An new Ovi services splash screen
  • An Ovi Store client (though it’s buggy, selections from the Options menu are problematic…. – best use the mobile Ovi Store site in the meantime?)
  • An initial option to check for software updates when a customer first boots up the phone

Also reported,  there’s more free space on C: (around 70MB with a “freshly hard resetted” phone) with v20. There’s more free RAM (around 65MB after booting).

A Cameraphone or A Phonecamera? The Samsung SCH-W880

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

This has been in the rumour mill for a while, but not it’s official. The SCH-W880 is the world’s first phone with 12MP camera and optical zoom. Samsung managed to fit in 3x optical zoom as well as 720p video recording capabilities into the decent looking shell as well as Xenon flash for capturing subjects beautifully in lower light conditions. The image recording capabilities of SCH-W880 opens the debate of whether the W880 is a cameraphone like its older siblings, or it belongs to a whole new category of devices, namely “Phonecamera”s. Korea will be first to find out, and it seems we’ll keep drooling for a longer period of time…

Samsunghub.com managed to grab the specs of the W880:

The New Pentax K-x in all its glory

The New Pentax K-x in all its glory

Pentax today came out clean with their rumored K-x DSLR. The K-x is an affordable DSLR with some great features, some not present in its competition in this price range.

It features a 12.4 megapixel CMOS image sensor with sensor-shift Shake Reduction for stabilized image and video capture up to 4 stops max and a large 2.7- inch LCD with Live View feature for starters. Additionally it captures widescreen 720p HD video at 24 FPS to capture our love. Also uncommon for the price range, the K-x offers the True High Dynamic Range (HDR) image capture feature, blending 3 images with different dynamic ranges into a single picture “with outstanding shadow, highlight, and midrange detail”. 4.7 FPS image capture speed and 1/6000 second maximum shutter speeds are also worth mentioning about the K-x which has a price tag of $599.95 including an 18-55mm lens.

Read on for the full press release and some shiny press photos of the HD loving K-x…
